About Our Campaigns

BE SAFE promotes precautionary action to protect human health and prevent pollution. The precautionary approach shifts the questions we ask about environmental hazards from “what level of harm is acceptable?” to “how can we prevent harm?” BE SAFE works with hundreds of groups across the country to build a national precautionary movement through advocacy, educational events, organizing and technical support to groups working on local and state precautionary policies, and distributing cutting-edge resources, publications and model precautionary policies.

Working with groups across the country, CEHP educates and empowers communities to protect children from toxic exposures in the places where they play, pray, learn and grow. The campaign works on issues such as safe school siting, non-toxic pest management, least toxic cleaning products and procedures, indoor air quality, and more. The campaign educates communities on children’s special health vulnerabilities and brings together community leaders to collaborate on efforts prevent harm in their communities. The CEHP campaign created and houses the Green Flag Program for Environmental Leadership.

CHEJ coordinates a national campaign working to phase out PVC, the most dangerous plastic to our health and environment. In the past two years, we have successfully moved major Fortune 500 companies away from this unnecessary toxic plastic and towards safer and healthier alternatives. Microsoft, Johnson and Johnson, Wal-Mart, and Crabtree & Evelyn have all committed to phase out their use of PVC in packaging. We need your help to leverage these victories and win this campaign! Learn more about PVC’s toxic threat, how you can get involved in the campaign, and protect your family from the poison plastic by visiting the campaign website.

In addition to responding to groups that request our assistance, CHEJ has begun to actively focus its grassroots efforts on specific states that show strong potential for building a broad base of environmental health activists. By positioning ourselves in favorable political and social climates, we hope to create and take advantage of opportunities to organize and build the U.S. environmental health movement.
We have chosen to start in Ohio where we will focus our greatest attention and resources. In this state, we have the greatest chance to build leadership and establish collaborative, statewide efforts around environmental health issues and policies. We will also be working in New York and North Carolina, providing valuable assistance to organizations that are already working successfully within these states. By providing additional resources and support, CHEJ will help bring these states to the peak of their potential for protecting public health, the environment and win justice in this country.
