PCB’s- Invisible Threats – Did you know that schools that were built prior to 1979 may have old lighting fixtures that contain a toxin called PCB’s? Recently in New York City schools the EPA tested the PCB levels and found some of the classrooms to have extremely toxic amounts of PCB’s in them. This can cause long term issues for children and adults if exposed to them over a period of time. Makia Burns, CPOC Campaign Coordinator and Anne Rabe, Be Safe Campaign Coordinator will discuss the problem and the possible solution.
PVC-Free Green Schools – Ready for back to school shopping? Before you purchase those much needed items for your child, learn the facts about school supplies that could contain PVC (a toxic plastic used in a lot of school supplies like backpacks and 3-ring binders). PVC school supplies often contain toxic chemicals like phthalates that are harmful to children’s health. Mike Schade, CHEJ’s PVC Campaign Coordinator, will discuss what to look out for and how to find safer PVC-free school supplies for your children.
